These are some of the qualities I most admire. As an entrepreneurial adviser with a financial background and a restless spirit, I have been lucky to spend almost all my life advising founders and management teams of growing, SME businesses.
It’s been a stimulating journey, encompassing many exciting success stories. At the end of the day, with only very limited exceptions, I have learnt that there are clear reasons why businesses succeed or fail.
As well as being an adviser, I have ploughed my own entrepreneurial furrow. I built and sold my own accountancy firm, as well as being a co-founder and/ or investor in businesses in the IT, caretech, property, defence, manufacturing and retail sectors.
In terms of experience, I have been the senior partner of two accountancy firms, a managing director, a finance director, a sales and marketing director, a charity trustee, an executor, a chairman and a non-executive director.
In 2010 I decided to write it all down. My book, “From Vision to Exit – The Entrepreneur’s Guide to Building and Selling a Business” received wide critical acclaim, becoming one of Amazon’s best-selling business books when it was published in 2011.
I now split my time between chairing and promoting the Entrepreneurial Services Group at Smith & Williamson, a “Top Ten” accountancy and financial advisory firm in the UK, and running my own advisory and mentoring business, “The Entrepreneurs’ Adviser”.
